Intro
Shamrock QS is an unmanned fixed steel platform serving the Shamrock gas field in the UK Southern North Sea, Block 49/20a. Installed in 2007, first production began in 2008. The platform produces natural gas and exports it via a short subsea tie-back to the nearby Caravel processing platform. It hosts multiple well slots and remote monitoring/control systems, but no major processing facilities.
Field
The Shamrock field is located on the Indefatigable Shelf, producing natural gas from Rotliegendes sandstone reservoirs. The field was approved in 2007 and developed as a satellite tied into the Caravel hub for processing. Its relatively small reserve size and satellite design reflect typical Southern North Sea gas developments.
Facilities
Shamrock QS comprises wellhead decks with multiple production wells drilled into the sandstone reservoir. Gas is routed through subsea pipelines and manifolds to the Caravel host platform for primary separation and conditioning. The platform is normally unmanned and uses remote control from Caravel for production management. Onboard utilities are limited to emergency power, fire and gas detection, and telemetry systems. Safety systems include emergency shutdown, flame arrestors, and gas monitoring to ensure unmanned operations meet North Sea offshore safety standards. The short tie-back pipeline ensures secure export of gas for further processing at Caravel and onward delivery to the Bacton Gas Terminal. The installation’s design prioritizes simplicity, reliability, and minimal offshore footprint for a satellite field.
