Intro
Mad Dog is a deepwater spar platform located in the Green Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico, producing oil and gas. First production commenced in 2005. The installation serves subsea wells and exports hydrocarbons via pipelines, with a second phase development expanding regional production capacity.
Field
The Mad Dog Field lies in the Green Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico. Reservoirs are Miocene-age turbidite sandstones with complex structures. The field is a large deepwater accumulation developed in phases, with subsea wells tied back to spar facilities to optimize recovery and manage reservoir complexity.
Facilities
The Mad Dog spar supports topsides processing facilities for production from multiple subsea wells. The system includes manifolds, flowlines, and risers connecting wells to the platform. Processing facilities include separation trains, oil stabilization, gas compression, and produced water treatment systems. Oil is exported via subsea pipelines to regional infrastructure, while gas is compressed and exported or used as fuel. The platform includes water injection systems to maintain reservoir pressure. Power generation is provided by gas turbines. Control systems enable remote operation of subsea wells. The spar is moored using a deepwater mooring system designed for stability. The facility supports phased development, with infrastructure designed to accommodate additional wells and tie-backs over time.
