Intro

The Kilmar platform is a normally unattended installation (NUI) in the Kilmar gas field of the Southern North Sea, installed in 2005/06. It hosts multiple production wells and exports dry gas via a pipeline to the Trent host platform, with onward export through the Esmond Transmission System to the Bacton Gas Terminal. With export closure at Trent in 2020, Kilmar entered Hydrocarbon Safe status pending decommissioning.

Field

The Kilmar field in Block 43/22a produces conventional Carboniferous gas. Discovered in 1992, production began in 2006 with an NUI platform and tie-in pipelines to Trent. As part of the Tyne, Trent and Tors cluster, production volumes declined, leading to export route closure and field shutdown.

Facilities

Kilmar’s installation comprises a fixed steel jacket with topside hosting several production well slots (typically three) with Xmas trees, manifolds, and export flowlines. There is no significant onboard gas processing; dry gas flows via a ~21.3-km, 12-inch export pipeline to the Trent host where compression, dehydration and export to Bacton via the Esmond Transmission System occurred. Utility systems include remotely operated safety shutdown valves, instrument power for control and monitoring, and chemical injection for flow assurance. The platform is unmanned with remote SCADA integration to Trent/shore. Structural design meets UKCS requirements for shallow Southern North Sea conditions, including navigational aids and minimal helideck provisions for maintenance visits. Following market conditions and export closure, Kilmar is in hydrocarbon safe with decommissioning plans progressing.
