Intro

Energiverk Mongstad is an onshore gas-fired power plant located within the Mongstad Industrial Park near Bergen, Norway. Commissioned in 2009, it supplies electrical power to adjacent industrial facilities, including Mongstad Refinery and associated terminals. It does not produce hydrocarbons; instead, it provides stable electrical generation for complex refining and processing operations in a major energy hub.

Field

Mongstad Industrial Park interfaces with multiple North Sea hydrocarbon export pipelines that deliver crude oil and gas liquids from offshore fields (e.g., Troll, Johan Sverdrup, Troll B/C). The power plant itself is not tied to a single field but supports processing and export of hydrocarbons from the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Facilities

The Energiverk Mongstad facility comprises gas-fired turbine generators delivering electrical power into the onsite grid, which supports refinery units, natural gas liquids (NGL) fractionation at Vestprosess, and terminal operations. It includes high-efficiency generator sets, heat recovery systems, and integration with plant-wide control systems for stable, continuous power delivery. The plant’s electrical output is configured to meet industrial loads with redundancy and grid synchronisation capabilities. Utility systems include gas supply reception from nearby gas infrastructure, steam turbines for cogeneration, water treatment, emergency shutdown systems, and protective relays. Power plant control is fully integrated with Mongstad’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for coordinated operations across the industrial complex. Physical links include high-voltage distribution networks that connect to the refinery, NGL processing trains, crude storage, and pipeline pump stations, ensuring stable energy supply for critical processing duties.
