The Montrose flare installation is a dedicated flare support structure connected via a horizontal flare bridge to the Montrose A platform. The flare tower's role is to safely combust excess hydrocarbon gas from processing operations, particularly where export infrastructure did not initially accommodate gas exports.

Field

Serving the Montrose oilfield, the flare supports the Central North Sea reservoir complex producing oil with associated gas. The field's early infrastructure lacked nearby gas export routes, necessitating controlled flaring.

Facilities

The flare structure comprises a tripod/flare support jacket and elevated flare tips designed to accommodate high-temperature combustion of surplus hydrocarbon gas from Montrose A's separation and conditioning systems. A horizontal bridge connects the flare tower to the main platform, positioning the flare sufficiently distant to mitigate heat and radiation impacts on personnel zones. The flare system includes assist gas provisions, purge and ignition systems, and flame arrestors to ensure stable combustion. Interface piping collects designated relief and excess gas streams from separators and compressors on Montrose A's topsides. Control and safety systems interlock with the platform's emergency shutdown logic to automatically divert streams to the flare during overpressure or abnormal conditions. The structural design meets offshore safety and environmental regulations for combustion and flaring operations, with routine inspections and maintenance conducted to ensure reliability and compliance.
