Rough AD

A fixed steel-jacket drilling and wellhead platform in the Rough gas field on the UK Continental Shelf (Blocks 47/8A). Installed in 1975 as part of the Rough Alpha complex (47/8A), it supported well operations and feed into Rough AP and the wider storage/production infrastructure. (turn0search24)

Field

The Rough field is a Permian Rotliegendes sandstone gas field in the Southern North Sea, originally producing gas from 1975 and later converted to a gas storage facility in 1985. The field lies ~29-km offshore of the Easington terminal and has been a key part of UK gas infrastructure. (turn0search24)

Facilities

Rough AD's primary role was wellhead support and drilling, hosting twelve well slots tied into subsea and topside flowlines. AD was part of the Rough Alpha complex alongside Rough AP, bridge-linked to provide structural support, accommodation/helideck facilities, cranes, and topside utility interfaces. Fluids from AD wells were routed to the central AP processing facility or into the Rough Bravo complex via the inter-field pipeline. While original gas production lines were used early in field life, the Rough infrastructure was repurposed in 1985 for bidirectional storage cycling, with gas injection during low demand and withdrawal in high demand periods. Utility systems on AD supported electrical distribution, safety (fire and gas detection), chemical handling, control systems and inter-bridge communications. Export logistics historically included an 18- pipeline between Alpha and Bravo complexes, with a main 36- export pipeline to the Easington Gas Terminal onshore. AD and associated jackets are now in decommissioning planning, reflecting the transition from storage back to production or full removal. (turn1search1)
