Safaniya
Safaniya is a giant shallow-water offshore oil-field complex in Saudi Arabia’s Persian Gulf, comprising fixed wellhead, tie-in, separation, compression, utilities and accommodation platforms. Production began in 1957. The field handles Arabian Heavy crude and associated gas through interconnected offshore gathering lines, with partially stabilised oil and gas transferred by permanent subsea pipelines to shore-based processing and the wider Saudi hydrocarbon network.

Field
The Safaniya field lies about 265 kilometres north of Dhahran in the Arabian Basin and extends roughly 50 kilometres by 15 kilometres. Its principal oil reservoir is the Cretaceous Safaniya Member of the Wasia Formation, comprising sandstone bodies interbedded with shale and siltstone beneath Mauddud carbonate and shale seals. It is the world’s largest offshore oil field and a mature, multi-platform heavy-oil development.
Facilities
Safaniya is developed through numerous fixed drilling and wellhead platforms connected to offshore tie-in structures and gas-oil separation plants. Individual wells flow through field gathering lines to the separation centres rather than to one central host. At the offshore gas-oil separation plants, wellstream passes through two parallel horizontal first-stage separators. Separated crude is boosted and pumped through subsea trunklines to the onshore Safaniya GOSP-1 complex for further treatment and onward entry into Saudi Arabia’s crude-pipeline and terminal network. Associated gas from offshore GOSP-2, GOSP-3 and GOSP-4 is gathered to dedicated compressor platforms. The compressor installations raise its pressure for transfer through permanent pipelines to onshore GOSP-1 and the wider gas system. A documented offshore separation centre comprises three bridge-linked platforms: a process platform, a central utilities and control platform, and an accommodation and support platform. Its utilities include a 13.5-megawatt gas-fired turbogenerator and compressed-air equipment. Permanent field systems include production and test manifolds, shipping pumps, metering, oily-water collection, operational and emergency flare systems, firewater, microwave communications and remotely actuated emergency shutdown. Control rooms monitor separation, pumping and utility functions, while the bridge-linked complexes include living quarters, heliports and boat landings for routine access. Safaniya’s offshore platforms have no crude-storage or tanker-offloading function; both liquid and associated-gas export are pipeline-based. Crude reaching shore continues through onshore separation and Saudi pipeline infrastructure.
