P-71 FPSO

A purpose-built, ship-shaped replicant FPSO and the sole permanent production unit for the Itapu field in Brazil’s Santos Basin. First oil was achieved in December 2022. Positioned about 200 kilometres offshore Rio de Janeiro in approximately 2,010 metres of water, it processes oil and gas from subsea wells, supports water and gas injection, stores crude and offloads oil to export tankers.

Field

Itapu is a large pre-salt oil-and-gas accumulation in the former Iara area of the Santos Basin. Public geological studies identify heterogeneous Aptian lacustrine carbonate reservoirs in the Barra Velha Formation, beneath the Ariri salt. The field is developed as a single-FPSO subsea scheme: producing and injection wells, connected by flexible pipelines and umbilicals, converge on P-71 for processing, injection, storage and export.

Facilities

The Itapu development was laid out with seven subsea production wells and four subsea water-and-gas injection wells. Public project descriptions identify approximately 133 kilometres of flexible pipelines and 66 kilometres of umbilicals connecting the wells with P-71. Subsea trees, flowlines, flexible risers and electro-hydraulic controls carry produced fluids and distribute injection and control services. On the FPSO, three-phase separation divides incoming fluids into oil, gas and water. The standardised replicant oil plant dewaters, desalts and stabilises crude before transfer to cargo storage. Its gas plant routes separator and vapour-recovery gas through main compression, dehydration, hydrocarbon-dew-point control and membrane carbon-dioxide removal. Treated gas can supply onboard fuel, enter export compression or be compressed for reservoir injection; the carbon-dioxide-rich stream can also be reinjected. Injection-water treatment and high-pressure pumps feed the injector wells. Four standardised gas-turbine generator packages provide power in a three-operating, one-standby arrangement. P-71 is the sixth and final FPSO completed under the replicant programme. The purpose-built hull is approximately 316 metres long and 54 metres wide, stores about 1.6 million barrels of crude and includes accommodation for 166 people. It remains permanently stationed in about 2,010 metres of water. Stabilised crude is held in the hull’s cargo tanks and periodically transferred through the offloading system to export tankers.
