Sleipner FL

Sleipner FL is an offshore flare stack installation in the Sleipner area of the Norwegian North Sea, part of the integrated Sleipner field infrastructure. Commissioned in 1993, it functions as a dedicated flare and venting support structure to manage excess hydrocarbons and safety reliefs from processing and compression platforms nearby.

The Sleipner fields consist of gas and condensate accumulations (Sleipner East and Sleipner Vest) producing primarily natural gas with condensate. Reservoirs are Jurassic sandstones of the Hugin Formation at ~3-450-m. The area processes volumes for export to continental Europe and integrates CO- removal and storage at Utsira.

Facilities

The Sleipner FL structure serves as the primary high-elevation flaring and relief point for the Sleipner area's production complex. It receives vent and relief streams from adjacent processing and gas treatment platforms, providing controlled combustion of hydrocarbons under overpressure or operational purge conditions. Designed as a multi-leg fixed steel jacket, FL stands isolated from main topsides but interfaces with gas processing systems via dedicated relief lines and pressure control valves. In normal operations, hydrocarbon not routed to sales gas pipelines is depressurized and routed to the flare tip at height to ensure safe combustion away from living quarters and critical equipment on nearby platforms. FL utilities include flare ignition and pilot systems, knockout drums to separate liquids before flaring, and instrumentation for monitoring heat radiation and combustion efficiency. The installation supports safety and emissions compliance for the Sleipner complex, which exports sales gas via Gassled and pipelines connected to continental networks, and sends condensate to Kårstø for processing.
