Gullfaks OLS-1

Gullfaks OLS-1 is an offshore loading system (buoy) serving the Gullfaks oil and gas field in the Norwegian North Sea. Installed in 2014, it functions as a dedicated offloading point for crude oil from deepwater platforms to shuttle tankers. It complements the fixed platforms and remains in service in ~136-m water depth as part of export infrastructure.

The Gullfaks field lies in block 34/10 on the Tampen Spur of the northern North Sea. Discovered in 1978 and onstream from 1986, it produces oil (and associated gas) from Middle Jurassic Brent Group and other formations. Development uses multiple Condeep platforms with satellite tie-backs, serving as a long-lived oil province on the Norwegian shelf.

Facilities

Gullfaks OLS-1 is classified as a loading system rather than a traditional platform. It provides a mooring and fluid transfer interface (offloading) for shuttle tankers collecting oil produced and processed on the Gullfaks A/C platforms. Oil production on Gullfaks is separated and stabilized on large concrete gravity platforms; oil is routed via subsea pipelines and surface manifolds to the OLS buoys. The system comprises submerged buoy elements, flexible hoses and connections that support hawserless offloading. Facilities include metering and control interfaces, umbilical supports, and safety features typical of offshore loading systems. Designed for continuous field export duty, OLS-1 works alongside its counterpart OLS-2 to maximize offloading capacity, with robust mooring arrangements and connection systems suitable for North Sea conditions.
