Tjeldbergodden is an onshore gas processing and petrochemical industrial complex in Aure, Norway, commissioned in 1997. It comprises a natural gas receiving terminal, Europe's largest methanol plant, and an air separation unit. Gas arrives via the Haltenpipe from the Heidrun field for conversion into methanol and other products.

Field

The Heidrun field is in the Norwegian Sea, producing oil and associated gas from Jurassic sandstone reservoirs. Gas transported via the Haltenpipe supports onshore processing at Tjeldbergodden, with surplus used for industrial feedstock. The field development includes subsea production and pipeline infrastructure within the Haltenbanken region.

Facilities

Tjeldbergodden processes natural gas received through the ~250km Haltenpipe pipeline. Reception facilities separate water and condensate, feeding gas to a large-scale methanol synthesis plant that produces ~0.8-0.9-Mtpa methanol. An air separation plant supplies oxygen and other industrial gases. A smaller LNG fractionation facility handles liquefied natural gas production. Utilities include high-capacity steam and power systems, gas treatment trains, storage tanks for products/feedstock, and comprehensive control systems. The gas terminal portion conditions gas for methanol synthesis, while the methanol plant uses catalytic reactors, distillation columns and heat integration. Infrastructure includes flare and safety systems, utility distribution, and export logistics (rail/road/sea).
