Marjan

Marjan is a shallow-water offshore oil-and-gas complex in Saudi Arabia’s Arabian Gulf, developed through fixed wellhead, tie-in, gas-oil separation, compression, utilities and accommodation platforms. Production began in 1973 with Marjan GOSP-1; GOSP-2 and GOSP-3 entered service in 1994. The established complex sends separated oil and gathered gas by permanent pipelines to the Tanajib facilities onshore.

Field

Marjan is a giant conventional field discovered in 1967 near the Saudi–Iran maritime boundary, where the accumulation continues into Iran as the Foroozan field. Public technical literature identifies carbonate reservoirs, with horizontal wells used to manage thin oil columns and water coning. The broad field contains oil, associated gas, non-associated gas and cap gas and is developed through dispersed fixed platforms and water injection.

Facilities

Marjan is a distributed offshore complex rather than a single platform. Producing wells on fixed wellhead structures discharge through flowlines to Marjan GOSP-1, GOSP-2 and GOSP-3. The gas-oil separation plants provide wellstream gathering, production and test separation, crude pumping and metering. Produced gas from all three GOSPs is collected through an offshore gas-gathering system, compressed where required and transferred by pipeline to Tanajib for further handling. Dedicated water-injection platforms, injection lines and wells provide reservoir-pressure support. The permanent offshore network also includes tie-in and riser platforms, pigging facilities, inter-platform pipelines and subsea power, control and communications cables. Installed support systems include electrical generation and distribution, chemical injection, process control, emergency shutdown, fire-and-gas detection, firewater, telecommunications, flare and pressure-relief equipment. Selected bridge-linked structures provide central utilities and accommodation; satellite wellhead platforms carry the wellheads, manifolds and equipment needed for drilling and production gathering. Oil and gas leave the field through permanent pipelines to the Tanajib complex, where the streams enter onshore treatment and processing infrastructure. Marjan has no FPSO, offshore crude-storage hull or routine tanker-loading buoy. Its long-term export architecture is pipeline based, with the three GOSPs forming the established offshore production and processing centres.
