Liwan 3-1
Liwan 3-1 is China’s first deep-water gas development, using subsea wells tied to the fixed Liwan Central Platform in shallower water. First production began on 30 March 2014. The field lies about 300 kilometres south-east of Hong Kong in 1,200–1,500 metres of water; its wellstream travels approximately 75–80 kilometres to the platform before pipeline export to Gaolan Island.

Field
The field occupies Block 29/26 in the Baiyun Sag of the Pearl River Mouth Basin. Its main reservoir is Sand 1 of the Lower Miocene Zhujiang Formation, a deep-water turbidite basin-floor fan composed predominantly of sandstone. Liwan 3-1 is a large gas-condensate accumulation developed through clustered seabed wells and manifolds, sharing transportation and processing infrastructure with Liuhua 34-2 and Liuhua 29-1.
Facilities
The initial Liwan 3-1 development used nine deep-water subsea production wells connected through three manifolds. Gathering lines route the wells to a larger pipeline-end manifold, from which the commingled gas-condensate stream travels approximately 75–80 kilometres to risers at the fixed Liwan Central Platform. The same offshore system subsequently accepted the Liuhua 34-2 and Liuhua 29-1 tie-backs. The platform stands in approximately 190–200 metres of water. Its steel jacket weighs about 30,000 tonnes and supports roughly 32,000 tonnes of topsides. The installation functions as the shallow-water reception, compression and transportation hub for the deep-water fields. Permanent project systems include subsea and platform control equipment and a subsea chemical-injection module used to inhibit hydrate formation in the long deep-water flowlines. The platform has no gas or condensate storage and no tanker-loading function. After offshore reception and preliminary treatment, the production stream enters the 30-inch Liwan gas export pipeline, approximately 260–270 kilometres long, to the Gaolan Gas Terminal on Zhuhai’s Gaolan Island. Final gas processing and recovery of condensate and natural-gas liquids occur within the onshore system before sales gas enters the mainland network. The deep-water wells are operated through control umbilicals, while the fixed platform provides the riser, export-pipeline, power, control and safety interfaces required for continuous operation.
