Kaombo Sul FPSO

Kaombo Sul FPSO is the southern FPSO of Angola’s two-hub Kaombo development, handling oil and associated gas from the Canela, Mostarda and Louro fields. The converted very large crude carrier entered production in April 2019. It is internally turret-moored in roughly 1,650 metres of water, about 260 kilometres offshore Luanda, and stores stabilised crude for tandem offloading to export tankers.

Field

Kaombo Sul serves the Canela, Mostarda and Louro accumulations in Block 32 of the deep-water Lower Congo Basin. Together they form the southern hub of a large six-field development extending across about 800 square kilometres. Reservoirs are deep-marine clastic bodies associated with the Congo Fan and structurally influenced by salt movement. Development uses dispersed subsea drill centres and long-distance flowlines to the FPSO.

Facilities

Kaombo Sul is configured as the processing and export host for the Canela, Mostarda and Louro subsea fields. Their wells connect through subsea trees, manifolds, production loops, injection lines, risers and electro-hydraulic umbilicals. Across both Kaombo hubs, 59 subsea wells and approximately 300 kilometres of subsea pipelines link six separate fields to Kaombo Norte and Kaombo Sul. Public project information does not provide a consistent final producer-and-injector count for Sul alone, so the verified development-wide figure is used. The vessel carries fourteen principal topsides modules. Installed functions include multiphase separation, crude stabilisation, gas compression, water separation and handling, high-pressure water injection, metering and chemical injection. Supporting systems include onboard power generation and distribution, process and subsea control, flare and pressure relief, fire-and-gas detection, emergency shutdown, firewater, seawater lift, marine systems, cargo handling and accommodation. Associated gas is compressed for export through the Kaombo gas network to the Angola LNG plant at Soyo, while part is retained as fuel. Kaombo Sul was converted from a VLCC and retains a ship-shaped storage hull with capacity of approximately 1.7 million barrels. A latest-generation internal turret brings risers and umbilicals aboard and permits weathervaning. Mooring combines chains with polyester ropes for the ultra-deep-water site. Stabilised crude is periodically transferred to tankers positioned astern through the FPSO’s tandem-mooring system and floating flexible offloading hose. The FPSO has no fixed bridge or pipeline connection to Kaombo Norte.
