Ichthys Explorer CPF

Ichthys Explorer CPF is a permanently moored semi-submersible central processing facility handling gas and condensate from the Ichthys Field. First gas was achieved in July 2018. Installed in about 250 metres of water, roughly 220 kilometres offshore Western Australia, it separates reservoir fluids, sends gas through the 890-kilometre Gas Export Pipeline to Bladin Point, and transfers condensate to the nearby Ichthys Venturer FPSO.

Field

Ichthys is a giant gas-condensate field in the Browse Basin’s Caswell Sub-basin, offshore north-western Australia. The upper reservoir is the Early Cretaceous Brewster Member of the Upper Vulcan Formation, comprising deep-water channel-and-lobe sandstones; the lower reservoir is the Jurassic Plover Formation, dominated by fluvial-deltaic sandstone. Development uses clustered subsea wells feeding the central processing facility through an extensive gathering system.

Facilities

Ichthys Explorer receives multiphase production from subsea wells distributed across the Brewster and Plover reservoirs. The wells are connected through subsea trees, manifolds, flowlines, production risers and electro-hydraulic control umbilicals forming an offshore gathering network of about 130 kilometres. On the CPF, inlet facilities separate the reservoir stream into gas, condensate and water. The gas is conditioned by removing free water, liquids and specified impurities before export, while most separated condensate is transferred through dedicated inter-facility piping to the nearby Ichthys Venturer FPSO for further processing, storage and tanker offloading. A smaller condensate fraction remains with the export-gas stream for recovery at the onshore plant. Dry gas leaves the CPF through the 42-inch, approximately 890-kilometre Ichthys Gas Export Pipeline, which terminates at the Bladin Point LNG facilities near Darwin. The CPF has no crude-storage or tanker-loading role. Its four-column semi-submersible hull supports topsides measuring about 130 by 120 metres and is permanently held on station by 28 mooring lines. Installed supporting systems include electrical generation and distribution, production and export metering, chemical injection, seawater lift, cooling-water services, flare and pressure-relief equipment, firewater, fire-and-gas detection, emergency shutdown, telecommunications and subsea-control equipment. Living quarters accommodate approximately 200 personnel. The facility was designed for a continuous operating life of about 40 years and for cyclonic offshore conditions.
