Hebron

Hebron is a fixed offshore drilling, production, storage and accommodation platform built on an iceberg-resistant concrete gravity-based structure. It handles heavy crude oil and associated gas and produced first oil in November 2017. Located about 350 kilometres offshore Newfoundland and Labrador in 93 metres of water, it stores stabilised crude within the base and exports it through a dedicated offshore loading system to shuttle tankers.

Field

The Hebron development lies in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin on the Grand Banks, close to the Hibernia and Terra Nova fields. It includes the Hebron, West Ben Nevis and Ben Nevis fault blocks. The principal heavy-oil accumulation occurs in Cretaceous Ben Nevis sandstone, with additional hydrocarbons in the Hibernia and Jeanne d’Arc formations. The large field is developed by directional wells drilled from one gravity-based platform.

Facilities

The Hebron gravity-based structure contains 52 well slots supporting oil-production, water-injection and gas-injection wells drilled from the platform’s integrated derrick. Directional and extended-reach trajectories allow wells to access the Hebron, West Ben Nevis and Ben Nevis fault blocks from one surface location. The topsides are arranged around a utilities and process module, drilling-support module, derrick equipment set, living quarters, helideck and flare boom. Installed processing provides crude-oil separation and stabilisation, associated-gas management and compression, produced-water handling, seawater treatment and high-pressure water injection. Gas-injection equipment supports reservoir management. Permanent facilities include production and well-test manifolds, metering, chemical injection, electrical generation and distribution, process control, emergency shutdown, fire-and-gas detection, firewater, drilling-fluids and cuttings systems, marine support equipment and accommodation. The reinforced-concrete base is approximately 122 metres high with a base diameter of about 130 metres. It was designed for North Atlantic waves, sea ice and iceberg impact and contains storage cells for approximately 1.2 million barrels of crude. Export uses the dedicated Hebron Offshore Loading System rather than a pipeline to shore. A six-kilometre, 24-inch concrete-coated looped pipeline connects the platform storage system to two redundant seabed loading stations. Each station incorporates an anchor assembly and a recoverable hose system through which ice-strengthened shuttle tankers receive crude for transport to the Newfoundland Transshipment Terminal or directly to market.
