Kwame Nkrumah FPSO

Kwame Nkrumah MV21 is a converted-VLCC FPSO serving Ghana’s Jubilee oil field. Commissioning oil was produced on 28 November 2010, followed by formal first oil in December. Externally turret-moored in approximately 1,100 metres of water, it processes oil, associated gas and produced water, stores stabilised crude for tanker offloading and exports compressed gas through the Jubilee–Atuabo pipeline.

Jubilee lies about 60 kilometres offshore Ghana across the Deepwater Tano and West Cape Three Points areas of the Tano Basin. The large accumulation comprises Upper Cretaceous deep-water turbidite sandstones, including the Upper and Lower Mahogany reservoir intervals, deposited as channel and frontal-splay systems. Development uses multiple seabed drill centres with production and injection wells tied to a single FPSO.

Facilities

Jubilee Phase 1 comprised 17 subsea wells: nine oil producers, six water injectors and two gas injectors, connected through eight subsea manifolds and associated flowlines, flexible risers and electro-hydraulic umbilicals. Later phases added further production and injection wells and manifolds while retaining Kwame Nkrumah as the host. The subsea architecture gathers multiphase fluids from distributed drill centres and routes them through the FPSO’s external turret. Seventeen topside modules provide crude separation and treatment, gas processing and compression, produced-water treatment, seawater treatment and high-pressure water injection, gas injection, chemical injection and electrical generation. Separated crude is stabilised and metered before entering the hull tanks. Associated gas is compressed for fuel, reservoir injection or export. Produced formation water is treated before discharge or field reuse. Permanent safety and utility systems include flare and pressure relief, firewater, fire-and-gas detection, emergency shutdown, process and subsea controls, seawater lift, telecommunications and accommodation. The converted tanker has approximately 1.6 million barrels of crude-storage capacity. A SOFEC external turret mooring system anchors the vessel and carries production, injection and control connections while permitting weathervaning. Stabilised oil is transferred to export tankers through the FPSO’s offshore offloading arrangement. Gas export uses the 12-inch, approximately 58–59-kilometre Jubilee–Atuabo Gas Pipeline, which also receives TEN gas and terminates at the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant. The FPSO has no bridge connection or fixed oil-export pipeline.
