Almirante Barroso FPSO

FPSO Almirante Barroso MV32 is a converted tanker FPSO forming the fifth production system of the Búzios field. First oil was achieved in May 2023. Spread-moored about 180 kilometres offshore Brazil in approximately 1,900 metres of water, it receives oil-and-gas fluids from subsea wells, provides separation and treatment, supplies water and gas injection, stores stabilised crude and offloads it to export tankers.

Búzios is a supergiant pre-salt oil-and-gas field on the Santos Basin Outer High, around 180 kilometres off Rio de Janeiro. Its principal reservoirs are heterogeneous Barremian–Aptian lacustrine carbonates: Barra Velha microbial, spherulitic and reworked facies overlying coquina-rich Itapema intervals, sealed by Ariri evaporites. The field is developed in discrete subsea-to-FPSO modules; Almirante Barroso serves the Búzios 5 module.

Facilities

The Búzios 5 subsea development was designed for fifteen wells, comprising eight oil producers and seven water-or-gas injectors. Subsea trees connect through production, service, injection and control lines to Almirante Barroso. Its riser layout provides 48 flexible risers and umbilicals, with provision to substitute 18 production or gas-injection flexible pipes with steel risers. Documented connections include four oil-production risers, seven convertible oil-production or water-injection risers, four service risers, two water-injection risers, seven gas-injection or service risers, six water-or-gas injection risers, one gas import-export riser, sixteen control umbilicals and one fibre-optic cable. Topsides facilities separate and treat oil, gas and produced water, compress associated gas and provide water and gas injection. The seawater-treatment plant includes coarse strainers, ultrafiltration, sulphate-removal membrane trains, vacuum deaeration, chemical-cleaning equipment and booster pumps, producing low-sulphate water for reservoir injection. Stabilised crude is stored in cargo tanks with a capacity of approximately 1.4 million barrels and transferred to visiting tankers. The dedicated gas import-export riser connects the FPSO to the field’s permanent gas system. The converted 282,000-deadweight-tonne tanker is held on station by an ABS-classed spread mooring. Four groups of six chain-and-polyester lines terminate through pile chains at torpedo piles, forming a 24-line permanent mooring in about 1,900 metres of water.
