Egina FPSO

Egina FPSO is a purpose-built, ship-shaped floating production, storage and offloading vessel serving Nigeria’s Egina oil field. First oil was achieved in December 2018. Moored in approximately 1,600 metres of water, it receives oil and associated gas from an extensive subsea production system, processes and stores the crude, and exports it to tankers through a separate offshore loading terminal.

Field

Egina lies approximately 150 kilometres offshore Nigeria in OML 130, within the deep-water eastern Niger Delta Basin. It is a large oil field developed by subsea wells connected to a central FPSO rather than fixed surface platforms. Reservoirs comprise stacked Middle- to Upper-Miocene deep-marine turbidite sandstones arranged in channel and lobe complexes within a broad north-east–south-west-trending anticlinal structure.

Facilities

The Egina development comprises 44 subsea wells connected to the FPSO through manifolds, insulated flowlines, flexible risers and electro-hydraulic control umbilicals. The well system incorporates oil producers together with dedicated water- and gas-injection wells for reservoir-pressure management and hydrocarbon displacement. Subsea production is gathered through several drill centres before reaching the vessel’s turret and topsides. Installed process facilities perform multiphase separation, crude stabilisation, gas treatment and compression, produced-water treatment, seawater treatment and high-pressure water injection. Compressed gas supports reservoir injection and other process requirements. Metering systems measure processed and exported fluids, while chemical-injection equipment supports flow assurance, corrosion control and subsea operation. The FPSO is approximately 330 metres long and has storage capacity of about 2.3 million barrels. It is permanently moored through a large internal turret system that permits the vessel to weathervane while maintaining connections to the subsea risers and umbilicals. Stabilised oil is exported through a dedicated Offloading Loading Terminal, comprising a subsea-connected buoy approximately two kilometres from the FPSO. Export tankers moor to the terminal and receive crude through a dual-hose arrangement rather than loading directly from the vessel. Major utilities include onboard power generation, seawater lift, cooling and heating systems, flare and relief facilities, firewater, emergency shutdown, fire-and-gas detection, telecommunications, marine systems and living quarters. The hull and topsides were purpose-built for long-term deep-water operation rather than converted from a trading tanker.
