The Al Shaheen development comprises more than 300 production and water-injection wells distributed among numerous fixed wellhead, production, processing, utilities and accommodation platforms. The offshore installations are linked by approximately 20 permanent pipelines carrying multiphase production, injection water, produced water and gas between the field centres. Long horizontal wells are fundamental to draining the field’s thin, low-permeability reservoirs; the BD-04A extended-reach well achieved a measured length of 12,289 metres and a horizontal displacement of 10,902 metres in 2008. Processing installations separate crude oil, associated gas and produced water. Treated seawater is distributed for reservoir-pressure support through the field’s water-injection network, while produced water is collected and treated within the offshore complex. Stabilised crude is transferred through subsea pipelines to the permanently moored FSO Asia and FSO Africa, which provide offshore storage and tanker-loading capability. Earlier development phases also incorporated single-point-mooring export arrangements. Associated gas is gathered, compressed and routed through permanent gas infrastructure, including an export connection through the North Field Alpha facilities toward Mesaieed; part of the gas is retained offshore for fuel and power generation. The complex includes electrical generation and distribution, flare and relief systems, chemical injection, firewater, seawater-lift equipment, telecommunications, platform control and emergency-shutdown systems. Bridge-linked platform groups centralise processing and utilities while satellite wellhead structures support extensive horizontal drilling coverage.
