Akpo FPSO

Akpo FPSO is a purpose-built, spread-moored FPSO processing condensate and natural gas from a deep-water development offshore Nigeria. First production began in March 2009. Installed about 200 kilometres offshore in approximately 1,325 metres of water, it receives a large subsea well network, stores stabilised condensate, exports liquids through a remote buoy and sends gas by pipeline to the Amenam/Kpono platform.

Field

Akpo lies in the deep-water Niger Delta Basin, in water depths ranging approximately from 1,100 to 1,700 metres. The large gas-condensate accumulation is hosted by Miocene deep-marine turbidite sandstones deposited in channelised and lobe complexes. Development uses dispersed and clustered subsea wells with water and gas injection, gathered to a single central FPSO rather than fixed surface wellhead platforms.

Facilities

The original Akpo development comprises 44 subsea wells: 22 production wells, 20 water injectors and two gas injectors. The seabed system includes clustered and dispersed well centres, manifolds, approximately 100–110 kilometres of production and injection flowlines, control umbilicals and 14 risers connecting the field to the FPSO. Gas and water injection provide pressure support, while electro-hydraulic controls operate and monitor the subsea trees. More than 17 topside modules carry two main processing trains. Installed functions include oil, condensate, gas and water separation; liquid stabilisation; gas compression; produced-water handling; seawater treatment; high-pressure water injection; gas injection; metering; and chemical injection. Associated gas is divided between reservoir injection, fuel use and export. Permanent utilities include onboard power generation and distribution, flare and pressure-relief equipment, firewater, fire-and-gas detection, emergency shutdown, integrated process and subsea controls, marine services and accommodation for approximately 240 people. The purpose-built hull is about 310 metres long and 61 metres wide, is held by twelve permanent mooring lines and stores approximately two million barrels of stabilised liquid hydrocarbons. Condensate is transferred through offloading lines to a deep-water loading buoy about two kilometres from the FPSO, where export tankers receive cargo. Export gas travels through a 16-inch pipeline approximately 150 kilometres to the Amenam/Kpono AMP2 platform, then continues through established infrastructure toward the Bonny Island LNG facilities.
