Independence

Independence is a deepwater semi-submersible platform in the Gulf of Mexico, installed in 2007 as a dedicated natural gas production hub. It gathers and processes gas from multiple subsea fields and exports via a major trunk pipeline system. The facility is moored and designed specifically for gas handling and compression.

Field

The Independence Hub is located in Mississippi Canyon, Gulf of Mexico, and is associated with multiple gas fields including Atlas, Atlas Northwest, and others. Reservoirs are primarily Miocene-age sandstones. The development is large-scale, designed as a regional gas gathering and export system.

Facilities

Independence Hub is a semi-submersible platform connected to numerous subsea gas wells via flowlines and manifolds. The facility is designed for gas processing, including separation of liquids, dehydration, and high-capacity gas compression. Produced gas is exported via the Independence Trail Pipeline, a major deepwater gas transmission system connecting offshore production to onshore markets. Condensate liquids are stabilised and exported via pipeline. Subsea infrastructure includes extensive flowlines, manifolds, and electro-hydraulic umbilicals for control and chemical injection. Flow assurance is critical, with dehydration and chemical injection systems preventing hydrate formation. Power is generated onboard using gas turbines. The hub-and-spoke design allows multiple fields to tie into a central processing facility, maximising infrastructure efficiency and enabling large-scale gas export from deepwater reservoirs.
