Intro
Edvard Grieg is a fixed offshore production platform in the Utsira High area of the central North Sea, producing oil and associated gas. Installed on a steel jacket and full processing topsides, it began production in 2015 and serves as a regional hub for oil/gas export via pipelines. The facility also receives power from onshore networks, reducing emissions.
Field
The Edvard Grieg field, discovered in 2007, lies in ~110-m water depth on the Utsira High. Reservoirs are sandstone and conglomerate of Late-Triassic to Early-Cretaceous age. This oil-dominant field employs pressure support through water injection and is tied into regional pipeline export systems for both oil and gas.
Facilities
Edvard Grieg’s fixed platform comprises a steel jacket substructure supporting topside processing and utilities. Wells (typically ~10 production and supporting injection wells) deliver multiphase fluids to separators where oil, gas, and water are partitioned. Oil is stabilised and exported via pipeline to the Grane Oil Pipeline and onward to the Sture terminal onshore; gas is exported via separate pipeline infrastructure (e.g., the SAGE system to the UK). Utility support includes water handling, gas compression, flare systems, power distribution (with shore-supplied electricity reducing onboard generation), and accommodation and safety systems. The facility also hosts drilling and intervention interfaces, with jack-up rig activity for well work. Control systems span process automation, safety interlocks, and emergency shutdowns. Redundancy and robust design ensure continuous operation, while the platform serves as a host for subsea tie-backs from adjacent discoveries and test production campaigns.
