Intro

The Emden gas terminal in Germany is a major receiving facility for Norwegian offshore natural gas delivered via the Norpipe and related pipeline systems. It conducts metering, quality control, pressure regulation and conditioning of incoming gas before transfer into German and wider European transmission networks under Gassco operation.

Field

Emden serves as a principal onshore gas reception point for North Sea gas exports, particularly from Norwegian infrastructure such as the Norpipe natural gas pipeline tied to the Statpipe network. It supports supply security for continental Europe by conditioning and handing off sales quality gas to domestic and transit pipelines.

Facilities

The Emden terminal includes metering stations (e.g., EMS – Europipe Metering Station) that measure and regulate pressure and gas quality for receipts from North Sea pipelines. It can interface with multiple subsea export sources and routes gas into German network operators. Key elements comprise high-capacity metering and control systems, filtration and temperature/pressure conditioning equipment, safety systems for gas handling, and connections to grid injection points. Utilities include electrical power, gas conditioning skids, compressors and control/SCADA systems ensuring stable throughput. The facility also supports operations for downstream distribution or storage, interfacing with local transmission pipelines feeding domestic and cross-border consumers.
