Intro

Ninian South (also Ninian Southern) is a fixed steel jacket platform in the Ninian oilfield, UK North Sea. Installed in June 1977 and first producing in December 1978, it combines drilling, production, and accommodation functions. It operates as a satellite to the hub and exports to Ninian Central via pipeline.

Field

The Ninian field in the northern North Sea was discovered in 1974 and hosts prolific oil reservoirs in Middle Jurassic Brent Group sandstones. The field was one of the UK’s major producers, with recoverable oil in the order of billions of barrels, developed with multiple fixed platforms including Central, Southern, and formerly Northern.

Facilities

Ninian South’s infrastructure includes integrated drilling rigs, production wells, and process modules for 3-phase separation of crude oil, gas, and water. The platform supports numerous production wells and water-injection wells to maintain reservoir pressure. Well fluids are processed through separators, metered, and exported through a 24-inch pipeline to the Ninian Central platform, which in turn exports via the Ninian Pipeline to Sullom Voe Terminal. Gas may be compressed for fuel or export, and produced water is treated in hydrocyclones or other treatment systems before discharge. Utilities include electrical generation, HVAC, firewater, lifeboats, and accommodation for crew. It also ties back to nearby subsea fields such as Lyell via subsea pipelines. Control systems onboard coordinate production and safety management. Ninian South’s fixed jacket supports topsides modules and drilling derrick designed for harsh North Sea conditions.
