Intro

Helix is a deepwater spar production platform in the Gulf of Mexico, installed in 2000 and later repurposed from a production facility to a well intervention and processing unit. Originally designed for oil and gas production, it operated as a host facility for subsea wells before conversion to a specialised offshore service role.

Field

The Helix (formerly known as Phoenix) field is located in Green Canyon, Gulf of Mexico, producing from Miocene turbidite sandstone reservoirs. The field was moderate in size and developed using subsea wells tied to a central spar platform.

Facilities

The Helix facility was originally a spar platform supporting subsea wells tied back via manifolds and flowlines. Production fluids were transported through risers to topside processing systems including separation, gas compression, and produced water treatment. Oil was exported via regional pipeline systems, while gas was transported through offshore gas networks. Subsea infrastructure included umbilicals for control and chemical injection. Following cessation of production operations, the facility was converted into a well intervention unit, retaining core marine and utility systems such as power generation, dynamic positioning support systems, and control infrastructure. The spar hull continues to provide a stable platform for offshore operations, though its primary function has shifted from production to intervention and support activities.
