Intro

Simba is a subsea tie-back development in the Gulf of Mexico, producing oil and gas through the Thunder Horse platform. First production occurred in the mid-2000s. The development has no standalone surface facility and relies on the host for processing and export.

Field

The Simba Field is located in the Mississippi Canyon area near the Thunder Horse development. Reservoirs are deepwater Miocene and Lower Tertiary sandstones. The field is relatively small and developed as a satellite tie-back to maximise recovery using existing infrastructure.

Facilities

The Simba development consists of subsea production wells tied back to the Thunder Horse semi-submersible production platform. Subsea trees and manifolds gather production and transport it via flowlines and risers to the host facility. At Thunder Horse, fluids undergo separation, oil stabilization, and gas compression. Oil is exported via the Mardi Gras Transportation System to onshore Louisiana, while gas is exported through regional gas pipelines. Produced water is treated prior to discharge at the host. Subsea systems are controlled via electro-hydraulic umbilicals. The development may include water injection wells for reservoir support. By leveraging the Thunder Horse infrastructure, Simba avoids standalone topsides while benefiting from a high-capacity processing hub.
