Intro

Marco Polo is a deepwater tension leg platform located in Green Canyon Block 608 in the Gulf of Mexico. It produces both oil and gas and began production in 2004. The facility functions as a regional hub, processing hydrocarbons from its own field and nearby subsea tie-backs, with export through dedicated oil and gas pipeline systems.

Field

The Marco Polo Field is located approximately 160 miles south of Louisiana in the Green Canyon area. Reservoirs are deepwater Miocene turbidite sandstones. The field represents a significant deepwater discovery and was developed as a hub to accommodate additional nearby accumulations, including tie-backs from adjacent discoveries such as K2.

Facilities

The Marco Polo TLP is installed in approximately 1,300 m of water and supports a large topsides facility designed for multi-field processing. Production is delivered via subsea wells connected through six production risers and associated manifolds. The platform performs multi-stage separation, oil stabilization, and gas compression. Oil export is via a 14-inch pipeline approximately 36 miles long, connecting to the Allegheny oil pipeline system and onward into the Poseidon network. Gas is exported through a 75-mile, 18–20 inch pipeline linking into the Typhoon gas pipeline system. Produced water is treated prior to discharge. Power is generated by gas turbines using produced gas. The facility is designed as a hub, with spare capacity and infrastructure for additional subsea tie-backs. The TLP is moored by vertical tendons and supports steel catenary risers and top-tensioned risers, enabling stable operations in ultra-deepwater conditions.
