Intro

The Captain FPSO is a floating production, storage and offloading vessel operating in the UK Central North Sea, Block 13/22. Installed in 1993, it serves the Captain oil field and associated satellites. The FPSO is permanently moored and processes oil production before storage and offloading to shuttle tankers. Production is supported by extensive water injection infrastructure.

Field

The Captain oil field lies in the Outer Moray Firth basin and produces heavy oil from Lower Cretaceous Captain Sandstone reservoirs. Discovered in 1977, the field is characterized by high porosity, high permeability sands and has been developed using horizontal wells and large-scale water injection to sustain production.

Facilities

The Captain FPSO receives production from subsea wells via risers and processes fluids through three-phase separation. Facilities include crude oil heating, stabilization, produced water treatment, and extensive water injection systems designed to support reservoir pressure. Produced water is treated and reinjected or discharged as appropriate. Associated gas is primarily used for fuel, with surplus handled via controlled systems. Stabilized oil is stored in hull tanks and offloaded to shuttle tankers in tandem configuration. Utilities include power generation, seawater lift, firewater and deluge systems, chemical injection, inert gas systems, and integrated control and safety systems. The FPSO is turret-moored, allowing it to weathervane under environmental loading. The vessel has played a long-term role as the central processing hub for one of the UK’s largest heavy oil developments.
