Intro

The Sullom Voe Terminal is a major onshore oil and gas reception, separation, storage, and export terminal on Mainland, Shetland Islands, Scotland. Constructed in the 1970s-1980s, it receives crude oil from numerous North Sea offshore fields via pipelines, stabilises and stores it, and loads tankers for global export.

Field

Sullom Voe serves upstream fields in the East Shetland Basin (e.g., Brent, Ninian, Clair) and deepwater west of Shetland. It processes incoming hydrocarbons, separates oil, gas and water phases, and provides buffer storage before tanker shipment. It is not itself an offshore production platform.

Facilities

Sullom Voe comprises extensive onshore and marine facilities: inlet pipeline reception systems from multiple offshore pipelines, crude stabilisation and separation trains, large-capacity storage tanks (floating-roof and fixed), LPG tanks, and four deep-water jetties capable of berthing large crude carriers. Gas handling includes fractionation, sweetening and export via pipelines (e.g., East of Shetland Pipeline System) to broader network grids. Utility and support systems include power generation (with planned grid connection), water treatment, flare and safety systems, fire fighting, metering and custody transfer systems, and extensive control and monitoring infrastructure. Marine infrastructure includes jetties with high-capacity export arms, dolphin structures, and navigation aids. Sullom Voe’s design supports continuous high-volume throughput with segregation of products and robust safety systems for a major oil export hub.
