Intro

Clair Phase 1 Platform is a fixed steel jacket installation in the Clair oilfield, West of Shetland UK Continental Shelf. Commissioned in the early 2000s with first oil in 2005, it processes both oil and associated gas from the Phase 1 segment of the Clair reservoir. It serves as the core processing and export hub for the Clair complex.

Field

The Clair Phase 1 field is a major North Sea oil and gas accumulation in Block 206/8a west of the Shetland Islands. Discovered in 1977 and developed from the early 2000s, it produces from Devonian to Carboniferous continental sandstone reservoirs. It forms part of the broader Clair complex targeting long-life hydrocarbon recovery.

Facilities

The Clair Phase 1 Platform comprises a large steel jacket supporting integrated topside facilities including crude oil separation trains, gas compression and dehydration, produced water treatment, and reservoir support systems (e.g., water injection). Multiple production wells, water injectors, and associated infrastructure are tied into the platform jacket. Well fluids are routed through parallel high- and low-pressure three-phase separators to separate oil, gas, and water. Oil is cooled, metered, and exported via pipeline to onshore or FPSO export systems depending on field development strategy. Associated gas is compressed and dehydrated for export via the West of Shetland gas pipeline. Produced water treatment systems ensure regulatory compliance before discharge or reinjection. Utilities include gas turbine generators for onboard power, extensive safety and fire-fighting systems, accommodation facilities, and control rooms for operations and emergency response. Reservoir management includes injection wells to maintain pressure and enhance recovery. The platform’s robust design supports sustained long-term production in a harsh North Sea environment.
