Intro
The Heimdal Riser/Transit Platform (HRP) was an offshore fixed steel structure in the central North Sea associated with the Heimdal gas centre, serving as a riser and export transit point for gas from Heimdal and satellite fields. Installed in 2001, it supported pipeline connectivity for dry gas export until operations were shut down in 2023 and decommissioning commenced.
Field
The Heimdal area, discovered in 1972, is a central North Sea gas province developed with integrated processing and export infrastructure. Heimdal produced gas and condensate and later acted as a hub accepting gas from fields such as Huldra, Skirne, Vale and Valemon for processing and export. Production ceased in 2020; gas handling persisted until 2023.
Facilities
HRP was designed as a subsea riser and pipeline transition structure with manifolds and flowline connections to support export of gas from the Heimdal complex into broader transport networks. It stood unmanned in its final years, receiving pipeline feeds and routing high-pressure gas to export pipelines via the Heimdal hub. Subsea export lines tied into the Norpipe, Statpipe, and other export infrastructure passed through or terminated near HRP. The platform’s systems included subsea connection points, umbilical interfaces for controls, and corrosion protection suited to North Sea environments. During active service, HRP managed pressure transitions and acted as a conduit between producing wells, processing facilities and onshore gas grids. With field decline and export continuity shifting to other hubs like Kvitebjørn, the structure was decommissioned; removal operations began in the mid-2020s, reflecting stable design for gas export service duration.
