Intro

Kinneil is a land-based oil processing and terminal complex in Grangemouth, Scotland, which receives North Sea crude via pipelines (e.g., Forties Pipeline System). It separates incoming oil into stabilised crude and associated products and serves as a feed hub for onward export to terminals like Hound Point. It is not an offshore platform.

Field

Kinneil functions as the processing interface between offshore pipeline delivery and onshore export systems. It handles hydrocarbons collected from many North Sea fields transported through integrated pipelines such as the Forties Pipeline System before forwarding stabilised crude to export terminals or refining networks.

Facilities

The Kinneil facility receives crude oil from the FPS pipeline, where it undergoes initial separation to stabilise and treat the fluid to remove gas and lighter ends. The processing comprises multiple separation trains that reduce vapour pressure and strip gas for safe custody transfer. The resulting stabilised crude is segregated for export via pipeline to Dalmeny and Hound Point or onward to refining/chemical complexes. Gas streams may be routed into local distribution networks or flared where necessary. Utilities include steam/electric power systems for heaters and pumps, water handling, flare and safety systems, control rooms with process automation, and storage buffer tanks. Metrology and custody transfer systems ensure accuracy for commercial transactions. The design emphasises reliable throughput capacity and pressure/flow control to maintain specification consistency for export and downstream use.
